Barry y Tess eran novios desde hacía un año y luego de la pasión del momento, habían caído en un letargo y aburrimiento. Barry creía que Tess no era tan buena en la música como él había creído y Tess había comenzado a sospechar que Barry era demasiado inmaduro y prepotente: aquella relación no tenía mucho futuro.
Con esa impresión, Tess le propuso a Barry que hicieran un viaje de tres días por el Amazonas. La primera idea de Barry fue negarse, pero al ver la cara de decepción de Tess, cambió de opinión y aceptó:
_Tal vez esta aventura sirva para inyectarle un nuevo aire a la relación. - pensó.
Cuando llegaron al campamento, todos estaban contentos: reían, curioseaban por los alrededores, compartían; excepto Barry que estaba incómodo y tenía cara de pocos amigos:

Esa misma noche, en la fiesta de despedida, el ambiente era ameno y se sentía una buena vibra en el lugar, la cual tuvo su máximo esplendor cuando Tess comenzó a tocar el cajón: los cuerpos se movían afiebrados, sudorosos, rozándose como si fueran seres felinos o culebras apasionadas. Barry miraba a Tess con hambre, recordando por qué se había enamorado de aquella chica: su pasión animal era contagiosa. A su vez, Tess también miraba a Barry y se erizaba toda al ver la mirada penetrante del hombre: nunca antes un hombre la había mirado con tanta admiración y deseo.
Cuando Tess terminó su actuación, todos aplaudieron y ella corrió a los brazos de Barry que la apretó a su cuerpo:
