The Race

“Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)

“Disciplined runners consistently clear their heads and focus fully on the journey ahead . . . because their passion and zeal for the goal supersedes the strain. The goal beckons them onward. Passion doesn’t negate weariness; it just resolves to press beyond it.” Priscilla Shirer

Engage in the race I’ve set before you with full gusto! The most important requirement for success is that you keep your eyes on Jesus. Study how He did it, because He never lost sight of where He was going. He knew His race would end in an exhilarating finish with Me. Think of what He endured to get there—the shame, the Cross, the excruciating pain. But He finished well, and right now He’s in the place of honor, right next to Me (Hebrews 12:1-2). “When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!” (Hebrews 12:3, MSG).

Your Christian life is a marathon, not a sprint. Get into shape by immersing yourself in My truth. Identify and overcome the sins that trip you up. Ask friends to hold you accountable for personal and spiritual growth. Be encouraged by the people who are cheering you on! Let Me set your course and don’t get distracted. Always remember that Jesus is your motivation. Keep your eyes on the goal—a forever life with Me!
