He then worked as a cowboy in both Wyoming and Colorado before developing a strong interest in rodeo and bronco busting.

In 1907, Hoot signed a contract with the Dick Stanley-Bud Atkinson Wild West Show, which toured throughout the United States and later Australia. In 1910, he found his way into the movie business as one of the industry's first stuntmen. He performed stunts and trained horses for a payment of $2.50 per stunt.

Hoot's first major successful role came in the film "The Three Godfathers", which was a full-length feature Western directed by John Ford. This role brought him superstardom and established him as a prominent cowboy star. He became known for his comedic and light-hearted performances, which set him apart from other Western actors.

Throughout his career, Hoot appeared in numerous films, including the popular "Trail Blazers" series and the Republic serial "The Oregon Trail".
