Beyond Atienza, heading towards one of the most desolate and enigmatic areas of Old Castile, the legendary Pela Gorge and its surroundings, the curious traveler can reach towns that, practically forgotten under a subtle veil of ostracism, both tourist and government, hold, like a find worth discovering, heritage treasures of incredible beauty and remarkable mystery.
Places like Albendiego, on the outskirts of the city and with the Pela Gorge and its most emblematic peak, the Holy High King, as a backdrop, preserve a true marvel of 12th-century Romanesque architecture, suggesting restless, albeit hypothetical, presences: the mysterious church of Santa Coloma.
Beyond the historical presence of medieval religious elements without a fixed Rule, such as the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, popular traditions seem to have always affirmed the presence of enigmatic knights, the legendary Templars, who also dominated one of the most significant "Places of Power" in this part of Castile, building, in addition, a hermetic hermitage at the highest point, even above a modern Spanish Air Force base, dedicated to control and monitoring tasks: the majestic and enigmatic Holy High King.
Más allá de Atienza y tomando la dirección de una de las zonas más desoladas y enigmáticas de la Vieja Castilla, como es la legendaria Sierra de Pela y su entorno, el viajero curioso puede llegar a pueblos, que, prácticamente olvidados bajo un sutil velo de ostracismo, tanto turístico como gubernamental, guardan, como un hallazgo que merece la pena descubrir, tesoros patrimoniales de increíble belleza y notable misterio.
Lugares como Albendiego, en cuyo extrarradio y teniendo como telón de fondo la Sierra de Pela y su pico más emblemático, el Santo Alto Rey, conserva una auténtica maravilla de arquitectura románica del siglo XII, que sugiere inquietas, aunque hipotéticas presencias: la misteriosa iglesia de Santa Coloma.
Más allá de la presencia histórica de elementos medievales religiosos sin Regla fija, como los canónigos regulares de San Agustín, las tradiciones populares siempre parecen haber afirmado la presencia de unos enigmáticos caballeros, los legendarios templarios, que, además, dominaban uno de los más significativos ‘Lugares de Poder’ en esta parte de Castilla, levantando, por añadidura, una hermética ermita en lo más alto, por encima, incluso, de una moderna base del Ejército del Aire español, dedicada a labores de control y seguimiento: el majestuoso y enigmático Santo Alto Rey.
