I like it when Poseidon, Greek divinity of the seas and oceans, is in a good mood. It is said that when the god is pleased the seas become calm and serene, allowing the vessels a safe navigation and the fishermen an abundant catch.
And that was the first thing I thought when I stopped before this marble fountain that is found almost at the beginning of the Avenue of the Port of Havana, next to the Bay, and that has at its highest point the sculpture of Poseidon, King of the Oceans.
Although it's winter, in Cuba, a Caribbean country, the season isn't very noticeable. Today the sun was strong and the temperature was quite warm, with a clear, bright sky, which also makes the waters almost always a beautiful blue. That's why walking here and stopping to admire this scenery was a double pleasure.
This fountain, like many of Old Havana's monuments, was restored by the City Historian's Office, as it had deteriorated over the years, requiring some reconstruction. The fountain is simple, without much ornamentation, which highlights the majestic image of Poseidon, or Neptune, its most striking feature. At the very top, we see the god life-size, with handsome Greek features, his abundant curly beard, and a long tunic. The sculptor's manner and pose convey his power, strength, and imposing character. In one hand, he holds his powerful trident, forged especially for him by the Cyclopes, according to mythology, which grants him the power to command the seas at will, unleashing storms and earthquakes. This reflects the dual nature of the ocean, which is both abundance and danger, calm and fury. The constant energy between destruction and creation is what makes it so enigmatic and attractive.
I stood for a long time by this fountain observing the calm waters in which some wooden boats floated, and seeing the sea so serene I thought that this was because they are protected and guarded by the presence of Poseidon, and that is why one can feel so much calm and well-being in this great space of sea.
I also believe that the Fountain of Poseidon is not only a monument but also a reminder of the eternal relationship between humankind and the sea, a connection that exists and will continue to exist for centuries, since we are bound to the oceans that have shaped our history and our sustenance. This is also a place where one can pause for a moment to appreciate the beauty and serenity that the sea bestows upon us when it chooses to reveal itself in peace.

Me gusta cuando Poseidón, divinidad griega de los mares y océanos, está de buen humor. Se dice que cuando el dios está complacido los mares se tornan tranquilos y serenos permitiendo a las embarcaciones una navegación segura y a los pescadores una pesca abundante.
Y eso fue lo primero que pensé cuando me detuve ante esta fuente de mármol que se haya casi al inicio de la Avenida del Puerto de la Habana, junto a la Bahía, y que tiene en su punto más alto la escultura de Poseidón, Rey de los Océanos.
Aunque estamos en temporada invernal, en Cuba país del Caribe, esta estación no se siente mucho. En este día había un sol fuerte y la temperatura era bastante cálida, con un cielo despejado y claro y luminoso, lo que también hace que las aguas estén casi siempre de un hermoso color azul. Por eso caminar hasta aquí y detenerme a contemplar este paisaje fue un gusto doble.
Esta fuente fue restaurada, como muchos de los monumentos de La Habana Vieja, por la Oficina del Historiador de la ciudad, ya que había sufrido deterioro con el paso de los años, por lo que se le hicieron algunas reconstrucciones. La fuente es sencilla sin muchos adornos, lo que resalta más la majestuosa imagen de Poseidón, o Neptuno, que es lo más sobresaliente. Podemos ver en lo más alto al Dios en tamaño natural, con bellas facciones griegas, su abundante barba rizada y una larga túnica que lo cubre. Todo en la manera y la pose que el escultor le dio a su obra nos muestra su poder, su fuerza y su carácter imponente. Con una de sus manos está sosteniendo su poderoso Tridente, forjado especialmente para él por los Cíclopes, según la mitología, y que le otorga el poder de dominar los mares a su antojo desatando también tormentas y terremotos. Reflejando así la doble naturaleza del océano, que es a la vez abundancia y peligro, calma y furia. La energía constante entre destrucción y creación que es lo que lo hace lo tan enigmático y atrayente.
Estuve un largo rato detenida junto a esta fuente observando las tranquilas aguas en la que flotaban algunas embarcaciones de madera, y al ver el mar tan sereno me quedé pensando que esto se debía a que están protegidas y resguardadas por la presencia de Poseidón, y es por eso se puede sentir tanta calma y bienestar en este gran espacio de mar.
Pienso también que la fuente de Poseidón, no es solo un monumento sino también un recordatorio de la relación eterna entre el hombre y el mar, una conexión que existe y continuara existiendo durante siglos, ya que estamos unidos a los océanos los que han forjado nuestra historia y nuestro sustento. Este es además un espacio donde uno puede detenerse un momento para agradecer la belleza y la serenidad que nos regala el mar cuando decide mostrarse en paz.
