I live in Venezuela, and in this country power outages are a frequent occurrence. So yesterday when the power went out at 4:30 PM, I knew that we would have a 4 hours of continuous blackout. So without thinking too much I took my camera, put on a pair of old hiking boots which I have in my closet and headed for the hills north of town with the intention of waiting for the sunset there and take a few pictures...
Yo vivo en Venezuela, y en este país los cortes de electricidad son cosa frecuente. Así que el día de ayer cuando a las 4:30 PM dejamos de tener electricidad, supe que tendríamos un intervalo de unas 4 horas de apagón continuas. Así que sin pensarlo demasiado tomé mi cámara, me coloqué un par de viejas botas de excursionismo las cuales tengo en mi closet y puse rumbo hacia las colinas al norte del pueblo con la intención de esperar el atardecer allí y hacer unas cuantas fotografías...
I walked as fast as my limited physical condition would allow. So a little over an hour after leaving the urban fringe of town, I found myself climbing up the hills a little over a couple of miles away from the paved streets. The last third of the walk is a fairly steep road, but I still got there in time to take some interesting pictures of the valley and mountain scenery and - of course - of the sun setting behind the peaks...
Caminé tan rápido como mi limitada condición física me lo permitió. Así que poco más de una hora después de dejar el margen urbano del pueblo, me encontraba subiendo por las colinas a poco más de un par de millas de distancia de las calles asfaltadas. El ultimo tercio del recorrido es un camino bastante empinado, pero aún así llegué allí a tiempo para hacer algunas fotografías interesantes de los paisajes del valle y las montañas y -como no- del sol poniéndose tras las cimas...
This is a solitary place and at this time of the afternoon the temperature drops pleasantly thanks to the cold air that descends from the mountains... The silence and the view of the valley whose atmosphere is a little dimmed due to the smoke of some distant fires, constitute a moving combination and it is easy to dedicate oneself to observe, to meditate and therefore to forget to take some pictures... In fact, I think I could have taken more pictures, but I decided to sit on a rock and let myself be carried away by the feeling of isolation that places like this make me feel...
Este es un lugar solitario y a estas horas de la tarde la temperatura desciende agradablemente gracias al aire frio que desciende de las montañas... El silencio y la visión del valle cuya atmósfera está un poco atenuada debido al humo de algunos incendios lejanos, constituyen un conjunto conmovedor y es fácil dedicarse a observar, meditar y por ende olvidarse de hacer algunas fotografías... De hecho, creo que hubiese podido hacer más fotos, pero decidí sentarme sobre una roca y dejarme llevar por esa sensación de aislamiento que los lugares como este me hacen sentir...
The sun finished setting behind the mountains shortly after 6:00 PM, but the brightness remained sufficient to allow me to return along the trails without difficulty. However, I was forced to force my pace on the descent to avoid being overtaken by the absolute darkness of the night before returning to the village...
El sol terminó de ocultarse tras las montañas poco después de las 6:00 PM, pero la luminosidad siguió siendo suficiente como para permitirme volver por los senderos sin dificultad. Sin embargo, me vi obligado a aspirar el paso en el descenso para no ser alcanzado por la obscuridad absoluta de la noche antes de regresar al pueblo...
I arrived at the edge of the town at nightfall and a beautiful full and pink moon appeared on the horizon to the east as the culmination of an evening of pleasant contact with nature and photographs...
Llegué a los márgenes del pueblo ya caída la noche y una hermosa luna llena y de color rosado apareció en el horizonte al Este como colofón a una tarde de agradable contacto con la naturaleza y de fotografías...

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.
NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografias capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape 3.6.3.
