I train with Dana on a weekly basis. She and her husband do private lessons with an instructor at our academy, come to open mat to roll, and also invite us over to roll at their home. We  were in the office today and a guy we work with was talking about how size and strength make a difference. Now, to be honest, it does. There is no belief that when fighting an untrained or trained person, that those are not factors. 

However, he couldn't believe that he'd still be able to catch the choke. So, she offers to show him the guillotine so that he can at least see what it feels like. As she starts to lock in the choke, he picks her up to prove his point. She quickly transitions to the back and works in a quick rear naked. It was pretty funny and we all got a laugh. Jiu jitsu is an effective art. She's about 5'2 and about 105 lbs. He's about 6 feet tall and roughly 185 lbs.

I know that there also were no  punches thrown, but I still believe in jiu jitsu as an effective self defense practice. Most guys who are not trained, could throw on gloves, and a blue belt level girl, still will probably work their way to the throat or an armlock eventually, even if they are getting beat up.
