Zaanse Schans - open air museum of windmills, located in Zaandam, next to Zaandijk, administratively belongs to Zaanstad in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. A collection of old windmills and houses has been preserved here. Zaanse Schans is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Netherlands. About 900,000 tourists visit them every year.

Windmills on the Zaan River began to be built around 1600. Initially, they were used to dry the area, later they were also built for production purposes. Processed wheat, barley, oats, rice, paper, tree, edible oil, mustard, tobacco, hemp and many other raw materials imported from overseas countries. At the end of the 18th century, there were almost a thousand of them. After 1850, steam engines entered the Netherlands and took over the work of windmills. Most of them were liquidated in a short time. Today, only thirteen of them remain.

Zaanse Schans is one of the popular tourist attractions in the Netherlands and the ERIH anchoring point, the European Industrial Heritage Route. The district attracted about 1.6 million visitors in 2014.

The Zaans Museum is next to Zaanse Schans. There are seven museums in Zaanse Schans: the Weaver's House, the Bednarz, the Jisper's House, Zaan's Museum of Zaan, the Albert Heijn Shop, and the Bakery Museum.
