There an interesting event held in celebration of the Indonesia Japan Film Festival (IJFF), showcasing three intereste films for the public to see in cinema. It was an event I couldn't miss because this is one of those films that deserves a rewatch. 15 years ago, I watch this film on a pirate film website, and at the time, I have no choice but to do so because I was such a film lover.
Seven Samurai, I can't imagine how i ever get the chance to rewatch it in a cinema. I repeat to watching it in a cinema, a film that's been around since 1954... who was born that year?
This is a Japanese masterpiece written, edited and directed by Akira Kurosawa-, an iconic figure and one of the greatest film makers in Japan at that time. I never thought I'd see this film in a cinema... who would?
In 2026, films are commonplace and can be produced in a short time, but that's not the case with films from the 90s. It's incredibly difficult, with limitations in technology, actors, stories, and skill. But why do old films resonate so deeply in the mind and heart?
I know Seven Samurai had many limitations in every aspect, even in terms of story, cinematography, and the acting of the actors and actresses. Remember, this was a film from 1954, and we didn't even know about color cameras.
The 200-minute runtime wasn't an obstacle, and I watched it intently, slowly and thoroughly memorizing the story and plot. Ah, it turns out I'd forgotten so much about the story.
But today, this film successfully brought a new story to me. Seven Samurai, where in the end, it's not their victory, but the struggle to find happiness with the samurai. I love those 7 ronin.
