This is a reminting of the original Liberty Dollar from 1998. There were only about a dozen specimens made and distributed among early Liberty Dollar supporters. These originals are extremely valuable and expensive to acquire on the market.
But in 2018, a commemorative round was reissued in the same design, celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the original Liberty Dollar. Not as rare as the original, but only 100 of these were issued. I am delighted to own one of those 100 pattern Issue Liberty Dollars.
In 1998, when Bernard von NotHaus received the very first Liberty Dollar obverse die, he couldn't wait to strike a few specimens. But the reverse die had not arrived so he quickly mounted the new obverse die with the Royal Hawaian Mint "Pattern" reverse die and minted a dozen specimens that he gave to his early supporters. Today those specimens are legendary and extremely expensive.
In commemorative of the 20th anniversary of the Liberty Dollar, a 100 numbered 1998 Commemorative Patterns were minted with the original dies refurbished in proof condition. Each 1998 Proof Silver Liberty Dollar is edge numbered: 20TH 001/100 PF to differentiate it from the original 1998 issue and packaged in a special presentation case with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
I have specimen #037/100 which is a fairly low number. The number is stamped on the side, but not easily seen, thankfully there is an original sticker on the case showing the number. Perhaps written by Bernard von Nothaus himself.
Although it has 1998 on the obverse, this was minted in 2018.
It's a very good round and has deep historical significance.
Bernard is still around and still making Liberty Dollars. He was interviewed at a Florida coin show and enthusiastically spoke of the re-birth of the Liberty Dollar in 2021.
