Rainy season chronicles; slipper edition

It was during one of those rainy days. It had rained throughout the night and into Monday morning. By then, it was still dripping.

I quickly made my breakfast, wore my clothes, and of course, I didn’t forget to wear my rubber slippers so I could get to work and change into my heels.

My area is the type of place that floods when it rains, and you literally have to walk through the flood to get to where you're going. Getting public transport was like passing through a pipestem. So, I wore my house clothes and rubber slippers while carrying my office clothes in a bag, along with my handbag.

I came out of the house and was greeted by the sight I was expecting. It was nothing new to those of us living in that area. I stepped into the cold, dirty flood and walked my way to dry ground where I boarded a taxi to my workplace.

Everything went well as usual. The day went by, and when it was time to go home, there came a thunder blast followed by lightning. 😔 We all knew what that meant. Not long after, it started raining again. It was raining like the clouds were celebrating. The rain came with thunder, so I guess the clouds were drumming too.
We waited for up to an hour for the rain to subside.

We were all set to go home. I quickly dashed into the bathroom and changed clothes, this is now a routine for me during the rainy season. I stepped out and boarded a taxi to my house. Of course, the taxi couldn’t get me to my doorstep; it stopped in front of the flood, and I had to walk through it to get home. 🤧

I stepped into the cold, dirty water and began walking, along with other people who lived in the area. I hadn’t walked far when I couldn’t feel my left slipper. I used my foot to search for it since you can’t see through the water, but I still couldn’t find it.

I lifted my eyes and, behold, there was my slipper floating on top of the water. I could almost hear it saying goodbye: "I have run my course." I rushed to grab it and ended up falling into the water. I stood up, completely drenched — me, my clothes, and my bags.
My right slipper also went its way. I didn’t even bother looking for it. I just kept walking, all wet and cold, hoping to get home soon.

I had almost reached my house when a waterproof bag tangled around my leg. I thought it was a snake, and trust me, I jumped with all the strength I had. I was jumping and shouting while trying to kick it off my leg when I heard laughter behind me.
"Calm down, it’s just waterproof," a boy said.
But by then, the bag containing my work clothes was already floating in the water. I picked it up to find only one of my heels and the clothes were completely soaked.

I barely managed to get home that day. After I got in, I boiled hot water, took my bath, and went straight to bed. I didn’t even have the strength to talk.
