In Venezuela, to the north, kissing the Caribbean Sea, is a magical lake: The Maracaibo Lake.

It is the largest lake in Latin America and is number 19 of the largest lakes in the world; and on its shores I live, in one of its water villages.

I live in San Rafael de El Moján; a town that is at the entrance of the lake that opens to the Caribbean through a narrow strip, preserving its fresh waters from the many rivers that form it.

From it are the most beautiful skies that nature gives us every morning and every sunset, and today I give them to you.

San Rafael de El Moján

Located at the entrance of the Maracaibo Lake, this town was founded in 1832; and of its first inhabitants there are still complete concentrations.

Many of us come from them; Paraujano Indigenous who lived and still live in houses over the water called palafitos.

According to legend, the curandero or piache, which is a kind of witch doctor, called Mohán, lived in the area, and due to his fame as a healer and his magical knowledge, this town was named after him.

Thus, our town comes from witch healers; Indians full of magic that bewitched, until today, a land from which one rarely wants to separate.

There are dunes of desert areas, islands in front of us and a peaceful, beautiful lake, which gives us cloudy skies at times, starry most nights of the year.

In the lake, the rays are perennial, and one of them, the ray of Catatumbo, (Guinness World Record), is often seen from the village, shining all night, many times.

Maracaibo Lake

Our lake, our pride, majestic and magical, is connected to the Gulf of Venezuela by a small strait of only 55 km.

But it is fed by so many rivers, including the largest, the Catatumbo River, which do not allow the lake to fill with salt water from the Caribbean Sea.

Its waters are fresh, and in the arrival of the Catatumbo River to the lake, the wonderful lightning of Catatumbo is created, a phenomenon that gives 1,176,000 lightning flashes a year that, according to scientists, generates 10% of the atmospheric ozone of the entire planet.

Near the Guajira

On the other hand, San Rafael is the entrance to the Venezuelan Guajira; the one that joins with the Colombian Guajira and that is settled in deserts on the shore of the strong and rebellious beaches of the Caribbean Sea that bathe the Guajira peninsula, and where its inhabitants, the Wayuu Indians, still maintain their ancestral culture identical to how it was thousands of years ago.

Humble and colorful coasts

Proud of where I live, of the fresh water beaches, of the immense space that in front of us gives us the heavenly mornings and afternoons, full of grace with which we wake up and sleep.

Today I give you this sky of the town where I was born and from where I exist, work and write.

With its paths, its small fishing ports, its houses still on the water and the towers of its churches.

This allows us to be grateful, day by day, for having been born in this beautiful country that is Venezuela.

This humble tribute goes to the shores of the magical Lake Maracaibo that, on its shores, we left joys, sorrows, memories and built, with faith and joy, our dreams.

San Rafael de El Moján-Venezuela -Los Cielos de un Lago Mágico e Histórico-

En Venezuela, al norte, besando el mar Caribe, hay un lago mágico: El Lago de Maracaibo.

Es el lago más grande de América Latina y el número 19 de los lagos más grandes del mundo; y a sus orillas vivo yo, en uno de sus pueblos de agua.

Vivo en San Rafael de El Moján; un pueblo que está a la entrada del lago que se abre al Caribe por una estrecha franja, conservando sus frescas aguas de los muchos ríos que lo forman.

De él son los más bellos cielos que la naturaleza nos regala cada mañana y cada atardecer, y hoy te los regalo a ti.

Situado a la entrada del lago de Maracaibo, este pueblo se fundó en 1832; y de sus primeros habitantes quedan concentraciones completas.

Muchos de nosotros provenimos de ellos; indígenas Paraujanos que vivían y viven en casas sobre el agua llamadas palafitos.

Según la leyenda, el curandero o piache, que es una especie de médico brujo, llamado Mohán, vivió en la zona, y debido a su fama de sanador y a sus conocimientos mágicos, se le colocó su nombre a este poblado.

Así, nuestro pueblo proviene de curanderos brujos; indios llenos de magia que hechizaron, hasta hoy en día, una tierra de la que uno pocas veces se quiere separar.

Hay médanos de zonas desérticas, islas frente a nosotros y un lago apacible, hermoso, que nos regala cielos nubosos en ocasiones, estrellados la mayoría de las noches en el año.

En el lago, los rayos son perennes, y uno de ellos, El rayo del Catatumbo, (Récord Guinness), muchas veces se divisa desde el pueblo, brillando toda la noche, muchas veces.

El lago de Maracaibo

Nuestro lago, orgullo nuestro, majestuoso y mágico, se conecta con el Golfo de Venezuela por un pequeño estrecho de apenas 55 km.

Pero está alimentado por tantos ríos, entre ellos, el más grande, el río Catatumbo, que no permiten que el lago se llene del agua salada del mar Caribe.

Sus aguas son dulces, y en la llegada del río Catatumbo al lago, se crea el maravilloso relámpago del Catatumbo, un fenómeno que regala 1.176.000 relámpagos al año que, según los científicos, genera el 10% del ozono atmosférico de todo el planeta.

Cerca de La Guajira

Por otro lado, San Rafael es la entrada a la Guajira venezolana; esa que se une con la Guajira colombiana y que está asentada en desiertos a la orilla de las playas rebeldes y fuertes del Mar Caribe que bañan a la península de la Guajira, y donde sus habitantes, los indígenas Wayuu, aún mantienen su cultura ancestral idéntica a como era hace miles de años atrás.

Costas humildes y llenas de color

Orgulloso de donde vivo, de las playas de agua dulce, del espacio inmenso que frente a nosotros nos regala las mañanas y tardes celestiales, llenas de gracia con las que nos despertamos y dormimos.

Hoy les regalo este cielo del pueblo donde nací y desde donde existo, trabajo y escribo.

Con sus caminerías, sus pequeños puertos de pescadores, sus casas aún sobre las aguas y las torres de sus iglesias.

Lo que nos permite agradecer, día a día, por haber nacido en este hermoso país que es Venezuela.

Vaya este humilde homenaje a las costas del mágico Lago de Maracaibo que, en sus orillas, dejamos alegrías, pesares, recuerdos y construimos, con fe y alegría, nuestros sueños.
