Last year in November, I was looking for underground quarries in Charentes, along the river. I met a friend of mine and we spotted several suitable locations to spend the night beneath the surface. But, we heard about a place named the Lapidiales : back in the days, local farmers were used to work as quarrymen a part of the year for extra salary and quarrymen were working in the fields for the same reason. This created an exchange and a stone culture in the area, that's why the Lapidiales project naturally took place here. Local elected officials saw a good way to reconnect local people to the memory of the quarry exploitation, and a great way to project it in a great future.
The site is now a open air quarry where sculptors from all over the world are invited to work stone the way they want, in front of the public.
