Once you've tired of the thousands of temples in Kyoto go up Fushimi Inari for a sunset view of Kyoto. It isn't too far from the city and the train drops you close. The hike is not challenging but the endless red gates that whizz by is a unique experience. Best part as always, it's free! Pack a snack and before the sun sets, get on that NARA LINE train or take your rental bike to the start.

Hua Chang waterfall is a relatively unknown and refreshing waterfall that you can enjoy in peace. As reaching the falls takes a bit of a hike, not may make the journey. Best of all, unlike the others, it's free! An peaceful hour and a half hike journey through the jungles gets you to a nice roaring falls with little pools at different levels. It's free, secluded and refreshing! Doesn't get much better.

I was already at the Chiang Khong Border and made it across to the LAOS city of Huay Xai. You can book from Pai, Chiang Rai, and Chiang Mai as well. There was even a group coming all the way up from Bangkok. Most countries pay about $30 USD while Canadians are stuck with a $42 USD VISA fee. What have we done to you LAOS? From there, two options are available to make it to Luang Prabang. Taking a long way around with a 24hour bus or take the 2 day slow boat. Given the horror stories I've heard of an over-packed slow boat, I was keen to take the overnight bus. Things changed when I met a traveler at the border who convinced me to take the 2 day boat adventure instead.

The most popular hike will involve mt. Batur, but it doesn't have to. If the steep ticket prices and lines of tourists doesn't appeal to you there are alternatives. Luckily for me, I met Deemul, an Indonesian woman organising a trek up one of the lesser known mountains, Mt. Plagga. After a moderate 1 and a half hour hike we'd head down to the closeby waterfall NungNung rather than the busier GitGit Fall.

A couple trains can take you there, we take the JR line that brings us to the JR Sagano-Arashiyama station in under an hour. The station is small but busy. We step off and into a smaller Kyoto. The buildings are smaller, the roads tighter, but nature is more prominent here. Tradition Japanese shops line the road here and mountains jut out into the sky. Block out the sea of people and I could begin to feel the Zen seep through.
