". . , green is my favorite color. It's the color of nature and the color of money and the color of moss!" Leonardo Dicaprio

Just when I thought I'd moved on from my previous climb a few months ago, I found myself grinning ear to ear as I revisited the memories. The butterflies in my stomach and that rush of adrenaline during the climb? Turns out, they're still there, happily dancing in my thoughts. I'm sorry, I just can't move on! My wondrous heart can't just move on!😍

As I keep on saying, my Mt. Kapayas adventure was one of the most unforgettable, the most fulfilling, and ecstatic climbs I've had (so far). From the very start of the trail to the breathtaking landscapes of the mountains and the challenging ascent, every moment was filled with happiness and pure bliss.

However, it was the enchanting mossy forest that we traversed that stole the show for me. Well, it's not the typical lush green forest you might imagine, but believe me, it was one of the highlights that continues to charm my memories of the entire journey.

It's not usual for me to come across mossy forests, considering the tropical nature of the Philippines and the generally hotter and more humid climate of my countryside. While some parts of our country have hidden Mossy forests like the one in Mt. Dulang-dulang, Mt. Pulag, and so many more! So imagine the excitement that bubbled within me when I finally witnessed one! And, to be honest, when compared to the well-known and expansive mossy forests scattered across the country, the mossy forest of Mt. Kapayas is, well, "wala sa kalingkingan" (not even close!) Hehe.

But to the eyes of first-timers like me who saw its beauty and experienced its mystical charm, seeing it feels like stumbling upon a rare treasure! Eeeeyyy! I could feel that chill of awe again!

Mt. Kapayas' Mossy Forest

Too little but huge.

Honestly, my venture and encounter into the Mossy Forest of Mt. Kapayas was brief, only about 10 minutes but it left me with profound and lasting impressions. It may seem brief, but that short span of walking into the Mossy forest brings joy and "kilig" to me, a thrill for a lifetime. It may sound exaggerated however there's no denying the depth of emotion I experienced throughout the entire journey. I was holding myself not shouting! And I swear I will not forget this simply fulfilling experience! 😍

Diving in . . .

As I approached the Mossy forest, I could feel the temperature drop and a cool embrace surrounded me. I noticed the ground became wetter, the vegetation growing even lusher, and some of the rocks had mosses started covering them.

The mosses are scattered everywhere and some are even dangling on tree branches!

I slowed my pace at this time, each step became a mindful exploration as I observed the mosses closely. They come in different shades of green and in different types and sizes! It was a miniature world of diversity, a testament to nature's intricate artistry that demanded a closer, appreciative gaze.

From what I see, there are various species of mosses in the mountain which surprised me. Some mosses felt like old friends, they are very familiar to me, like the ones covering the rocks. Yet, there were others, uniquely enchanting, that captured my attention. There were even mosses that looked like seaweeds! Hanging on trees!

The mosses are growing wild and untamed here and there! My absolute favorite among all was the hanging mosses clinging onto the branches swaying gently in the mountain breeze.

It was as if these hanging mosses were nature's own chandeliers! Aren't they? What do you think?

The location of the Mossy forest is what also adds thrill and enchantment to the whole Mt. Kapayas adventure. It is located near the summit which transforms it into a captivating prelude to the breathtaking views awaiting at the peak. So before one can reach the summit and enjoy its view, one will definitely immerse oneself in the allure of the mossy wonderland!

Thoughts and Observation:

This part of the mountain might not be expansive enough to be called a forest, but what truly captivates me is the unwavering positivity of the LGU in officially designating it as "a forest". To me, this decision symbolizes the collective hopes and visionary outlook of the community on how Mt. Kapayas will evolve in the next 10-15 years. It's a testament to their commitment to nurture and preserve this space, allowing us to witness firsthand the beautiful transformation that time and dedicated conservation efforts can bring.

So until next then, see you Mt. Kapayas 10-15 years from now!
