For the third year running, I've used the Women's History Month of March to honor women who have had a notable influence on me, and have inspired the direction my life and decisions have taken. The breakdown by what they are primarily known for was:
6 political of government personas,
4 authors,
4 from entertainment,
4 family members,
3 activists or philanthropists,
3 athletes,
2 psychologists or philosophers,
2 teachers,
a publisher,
and a chef.
You can see each in my blog if you'd like.
Here, I'm highlighting the three singers among the entertainers I dedicated days to.
Day 6: Dolly Parton: Coat of Many Colors
One of her earliest songs from the album of the same name, it was written about a real coat her mother had sewn from scraps of clothing. She has spoken about how it also reflects the broad range of influences that make us who we are.
Day 30: Joni Mitchell; River
From the Blue album, Joni was distraught over the demise of the peace and love movement, and the increasing corporatization of the music industry.
Day 31: Linda Ronstadt; Girls Talk
Linda had grown tired of cranking out the same old recipe. Excited by the emergence of new wave music, she recorded the Mad Love album. The singing was all Linda, the songs superb, but the release flopped because it was just too different from what fans had come to expect. It remains a cult classic.
