Hello, fellow orchid lovers! Today I decided to write a post full of beautiful landscapes and scientific content to learn together about the wonderful world of wild orchids in Portugal. There's one species that we can only photograph in three parts of the country. I'm less than 20 km from one of those locations, so I went there to see if I was lucky enough to spot "Ophrys sphegodes." What do you think? Will I achieve this feat? Because I only have until May to get a photo.🌷🗺️
¡Hola amigos amantes de las orquídeas! Hoy decidí hacer un post cargado de hermosos paisajes y contenido científico para aprender juntos sobre él maravillo mundo de las orquídeas silvestres de Portugal. Existe una especie que solo podemos fotografiarla en únicamente tres partes del país, yo estoy a menos de 20km de una de esas localidades, así que me acerque para ver si tenía suerte y conseguía ubicar a: "Ophrys sphegodes" que creen ustedes? Conseguiré esa hazaña? Hasta porque solo tengo hasta el mes de mayo para obtener una foto.😮🌄

The first step is to carry out a preliminary study on the species we are going to investigate: "Ophrys sphegodes" there is no better site to locate them in Portugal than: (https://flora-on.pt/?q=Ophrys+sphegodes) one of the things that fascinates me about this orchid is its limited geographical location in Portugal, we can barely find it in the Arrabida area where I am today and more towards the center and reaching the south of the country, (Guadiana Park) and (Estremoz, Elvas) otherwise it was never seen anywhere else other than those three locations that I mention! My methodology for today is the one I always use because it is very effective, a walk in this case of 3.12km2 through the valley between "sao lorenzo and louro" which is where I could locate some specimens; I will be following the route and making detours to the bushes to see if I am lucky.📕😮🗺️
El primer paso es realizar un estudio previo sobre la especie que vamos a investigar: "Ophrys sphegodes" no hay mejor site para ubicarlas en Portugal que: (https://flora-on.pt/?q=Ophrys+sphegodes) una de las cosas que me fascino de esta orquídea es su limitada ubicación geográfica en Portugal, apenas la podemos conseguir en la zona de la Arrabida donde me encuentro hoy y más hacia el centro y llegando al sur del país, (parque do guadiana) y (estremoz, elvas) de resto nunca fue vista en otro lugar sin ser esas tres ubicaciones que les menciono! Mi metodología para hoy es la que siempre utilizo por ser muy eficaz una caminata en este caso de 3.12km2 por el valle entre "sao lorenzo y louro" que es donde podría localizar algunos ejemplares; voy a estar siguiendo la ruta y realizar desvíos hacia los matorrales para ver si tengo suerte.🌷🏔️🧭

With the help of Gmaps, I was able to have a reference on the elevations I was visiting within the ecosystem, we went from high areas at more than 250 meters high, passing through medium areas of 100-120m and areas just under 20m, this would help me interpret what type of Biomes it preferred (Ophrys sphegodes), we could now answer a question: does the orchid live in high or low areas? Does it prefer rocky or clayey areas? Does it live in scrublands? My intention was that if I observed a specimen, I would immediately take a capture in Gmaps to know at what coordinates it was located and to mark areas!🌄🚩
Con ayuda de Gmaps, conseguí tener una referencia sobre las elevaciones que iba visitando dentro del ecosistema, pasamos desde zonas altas a mas de 250metros de altura, pasando por zonas medias 100-120m y zonas a poco menos de 20m, esto me ayudaría a interpretar que tipo de Biomas prefería (Ophrys sphegodes), podríamos responder ya una interrogante: la orquidea es de zonas elevadas o zonas más bajas? ¿Prefiere áreas rocosas, o arcillosas? Es de matorrales? ¡Mi intención era que si observaba un ejemplar inmediatamente hacia un capture en Gmaps para saber en que coordenada fue localizado e ir marcando zonas!🧭🏔️

I wanted to start this experience from Monsanto Park in central Lisbon. There's no record of the species (Ophrys sphegodes) here, but I had nothing to lose by trying to locate a specimen. As you can see, the park is very beautiful, and every inch is designed for educational purposes. We see signs on many trees indicating the species and ecosystem. I know there are some orchid specimens here, and they begin to appear in late April as we enter spring.🚩🧭
Quise comenzar esta experiencia desde el parque de Monsanto en Lisboa centro, aquí no hay registro de la especie: (Ophrys sphegodes) pero no perdía nada con intentar localizar un ejemplar, como puedes ver el parque es muy bonito y cada metro está creado para la enseñanza, vemos letreros de muchos árboles que nos indican la especie y el ecosistema. Sé que hay algunos ejemplares por aquí de orquídeas y comienzan aparecer en finales de abril cuando entramos en primavera.📕🌼🌷
And it wasn't long before I found an "adult" specimen of (Serapias parviflora). We're normally used to seeing orchids with flowers that all look alike, but no! Within this world, there are some species that, unless we look in a book, we wouldn't know we were looking at an orchid, and such is the case with this beautiful species. This species is quite common and is found literally throughout the entire country.🌼📕
Y no paso mucho tiempo cuando me encontré un ejemplar "adulto" de (Serapias parviflora) normalmente estamos habituados a ver orquídeas con flores todas similares, pero no! Dentro de este mundo hay algunas especies que si no revisamos un libro no sabemos que estamos ante la presencia de una orquídea y tal es el caso de esta bonita especie, esta especie es bastante común y literalmente se encuentra en casi todo el país.😮🙂

Siempre que paso por aquí tiro fotos porque me encanta el parque de esta señora, es una anciana que se le ve de vez en cuando haciendo cosas en el jardín con objetos reciclables, y como puedes ver es muy creativa, creo que si tienes un jardín grande y cosas que no sabes que hacer con ellas aquí te dejo unas buenas ideas!📕😮
Whenever I pass by here I take pictures because I love this lady's park. She's an old lady who can be seen from time to time doing things in the garden with recyclable objects, and as you can see she's very creative. I think if you have a big garden and things you don't know what to do with, here are some good ideas for you!🚩🏔️

Now that we're entering the Montana, we can clearly see a big difference in the ecosystems in the area. We're starting to see rocks everywhere, and this is a sign that we could be entering the ideal territory for Ophrys sphegodes, but I still don't know if it grows at high altitudes or in lower soils. I'll keep looking and continue my research.🧭🌄
Ahora que entramos en la Montana claramente podemos notar una gran diferencia en los ecosistemas de la zona, comenzamos a ver rocas por todos lados y esto es señal que podríamos entrar en el territorio que es el ideal para: Ophrys sphegodes, pero aun no sé si crece en altura o en suelos más bajos, seguiré buscando y continuar con la investigación.🗺️📕

This is what I was referring to in this area whose ecosystems are totally different from "Monsanto" I got another specimen of (Serapias parviflora) which I told you was quite common at this time of year and we could find it in different ecosystems, here we have a clear example.🌼🌷

This is one of my favorites and finding it here at more than 200m high tells me that this area is full of orchids of various types, this one is not typical of high areas, it is a little more common than: Ophrys sphegodes our impossible-to-see orchid... So far they all prefer acidic, alkaline, nutrient-poor soils, a bit of everything to choose from hehe.🌍
Esta es una de mis preferidas y conseguírmela aquí a más de 200m de altura me indica que esta zona está repleta de orquídeas de varios tipos, esta no es propia de zonas altas, es un poco más común que: Ophrys sphegodes nuestra orquídea imposible de ver... Hasta ahora todas prefieren suelos ácidos, alcalinos, con nutrientes pobres, de todo un poco para escoger jeje.🚩🗺️

Finally, we see a specimen of Ophrys speculum.
I think we already wrote a post about it. We frequently see it on rocks and places with fairly low vegetation. What strikes me here is that it also grows on moss directly on stones. It's fairly common.🚩📕

creo que ya hicimos un post sobre el, lo frecuentamos en las rocas y sitios con vegetacion bastante baja, aqui me llama la atencion que tambien crece sobre el musgo directamente sobre la piedra, es mas o menos comun.🗺️🌼🌷

When I came down the mountain I was just under 40m high and in the distance I looked out and luckily saw what looked like an orchid. Normally these areas don't have orchids because the vegetation is very tall.😮

We just found a specimen of Ophrys sphegodes, the orchid we'd been searching for. Clearly, I had to consult some experts on the subject because it had a different pattern, but they explained to me that they are "mutations, variations." It also caught my attention that it grows in bushes, that is, areas with somewhat high vegetation, the soils are normally poor in nutrients and basic nutrients.📕🚩
Acabamos de encontrar un ejemplar de Ophrys sphegodes la orquidea que tanto estabamos a busqueda, claramente tuve que consultar algunos expertos de la materia porque tenia un patrón diferente pero me explicaron que son "mutaciones, variaciones" tambien llamo mi atencion que si crece en matos, osea zonas con vegetacion un poco alta, los suelos normalmente pobres en nutrientes y basicos.🌄🏔️
In more than three hours of walking I only managed to see an Ophrys sphegodes orchid. Its flowering months are February to April. We are at a good altitude to see several of them, but just coming across one proves what the reference says: its distribution is scarce.😮📕
en mas de tres horas de caminata solo logre ver una orquidea de Ophrys sphegodes siendo su meses de floracion febrero a abril estamos en buena altura para ver varias de ellas pero solo toparme con una demuestra lo que dice la referencia su distribuicion es escasa.🧭🧭
