Today is an happy day for me. I got a phone call from a friend that requested me to paint his caricature poster digitally. For me, it is a breath of fresh air because I spend a lot of my time with animation work. After receiving the email from him, I was very surprised because the poster was quite tough to handle especially when there are a few characters and it contains the background that is quite detailed.
I dare not reject for fear of disappointing him. So I took up this challenging piece of work with the hope that at least with the sndbox entry I can make some impact. I decided to engage in the details. So lets get started in the step by step process.

After mulling over it for a while, I was thinking what made this lady so special that so many guys are after her. It is okay, we start by making a few adjustment to the black and white contrast in order to get the depth of value field on the grayscale. A few parts of the drawing needs touch up by using the spray brush so that the quality of gray is at a satisfactory level. All objects and characters must be separated by layers.

I start the colouring process with the background first and when I managed to get the feel after the characters are coloured. This process I use layer screen for the change to the grayscale layer that I created earlier. At the foremost building I use the lasso and pen tools to get the intricacies on the front correct.

After I finish with the background earlier, I shift to each and every character that is at the forefront. Here the astuteness of the details is very important. Again I will have to know each character to get the quality that is acceptable to me as my reference for a correct colour.

For the final process it takes quite a while because of the number of characters. I use the brush screen and overlay to change the grayscale. I get the basic colours touched up based on original sketch that was given. After being satisfied with the process, I now use the elevl colour to balance the colour on the poster. Now you can see the result.

This is the final result. I was quite satisfied professionally although it took me some time. It is satisfaction such as this when I see my friend finally being able to enjoy this piece that I took a long time to complete.
