Do you give alms to beggars and street dwellers? Here in Metro Manila we have them roaming around too. Yes the government is doing part of the work but still there are some poor people who refuse help. I've heard tales of others who would even go back to the streets after selling off the free housing given to them, like WTH right?
What are we to do then to show we care for them? How do we give the poor our love as Jesus Christ instructed? Especially since it is already Lent, we Catholics are encouraged to fast and abstain plus do almsgiving! I have no problem with the first two but the last one... oh boy.
My Issue With Almsgiving
If you have no qualms in sharing your money to those in need then I commend you. Yes we can all donate to charity and such but that's not what I'm talking about.
Giving money personally to anyone begging on the streets, in public transportation, etc., has been my social issue ever since I don't remember when. It probably started when I "swore off" being nice to others. I remember a time perhaps in high school when people would always come up to me and I end up helping them with whatever. Like, aren't there anyone else around? Why me? Why is it always me they would approach and not someone else beside me or wherever?
And so eventually as an adult, I rarely gave alms to any street dweller or beggar I encounter. My mindset was like: "Seriously, why would I let them continue living poorly and encourage their laziness?" Especially in 2017 when I learned it is against the law to give alms to beggars, I
shared the info happily!
Fast forward to Lent 2023 when I had what I'd call a
spiritual renewal. Oh boy, eventually such a selfish behavior wasn't sitting well with me anymore. Lol. Yet, I still had that mindset and could not let go of it whatever I did. Around December of that year I saw and found out a new project by the social work government agency (now it's called DSWD
Pag-Abot Program) so I began sharing that instead!
Of course this felt like a reprieve from a usually selfish behavior. I would contact the social media account of that program whenever I saw street dwellers or beggars wherever I would go. They would then reply and also give updates if ever the people accepted their help or not. (Yes, this is one way of helping those in need.)
Contacting that government service is one way I helped the poor in 2024 (because I really still rarely gave alms). And we can all do this too! Check your area if there are any government programs and see what's there to help the needy. If we can't help them out ourselves, then let's find someone who really can. 😉
Anyway despite doing such I still feel guilty whenever I refuse to give monetary alms to beggars. I'm not rich and am jobless too so I don't want to give even a peso most of the time. I also don't have food in my bag often and I can't offer a smile since I still wear a face mask outside.
If I was my old self I wouldn't bother one bit, but because I have returned to God's flock, this has become a problem for me. I want to follow God's commandments and get to Heaven so I strive to find a way to get rid of this selfish mindset.
And so at one point during my prayer time I asked the Lord, how can I get past this big stumbling block? How can I give alms if I don't understand why I should do it? Giving any money is not enough because it will not truly help them rise out of poverty. Despite what priests have told me during confession there's still a personal block somehow.
My thoughts went on like... Just because Jesus said it in the Bible means I should do it for whatever reason. No, there has to be an answer to my why. Lol the stubbornness. It's not easy to change bad habits, for sure you know that too dear reader.

Did you ever think that love and religion have anything to do with each other? Plenty. Remember, God is love so it means we can expect a truly devout Christian to be loving and caring to everyone - the sick & poor, the ignorant, and even those who hate and hurt people (women & children, pious people, the weak, etc.). Getting to that state is the challenge though.

Jubilee Year, and giving alms is an act of charity, I could suddenly and easily do it! What a shocker! 😱 All of a sudden it was easy to give. Like, what the heck happened to me? Lol. (Read this for context:

Apparently I just needed a promise/reward as a reason to give alms? Hey I was able to do it without any problem, for some reason! It surprised me how it seemed as if I never had an issue with giving alms. I mean, why oh why??? 😂
For the sake of the souls in purgatory I gave alms to gain the second
plenary indulgence of the day whenever I could. (Thank you Lord for this Jubilee Year which happens every 25 years!) Of course I assume and always pray that God would grant it or otherwise even a partial indulgence is still fine. At least I did my best to gain it.
However outside of gaining a secondary indulgence, I still would not give alms freely! 😲 Dang. Here I thought my behavioral issue was already "fixed". 😅 What else am I to do then? Well I found several things last month that might help my "anti-alms" mindset.
How I'm Trying to Fully Understand Almsgiving
It's 2025 and my mind still could not completely comprehend how giving alms = penance (to not end up in purgatory), even if I saw it in a mini-booklet on confession last year. Like, why and how???
By mid-February I started to do something about it. Things I did eventually caused me to do an online search on the topic of giving alms to the poor for the souls in purgatory. This is because I really want to be able to help the poor/needy people in my own way!
Egads, who would have known there's plenty of information about almsgiving out there - from the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and even St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica! Oh my goodness why didn't I do an online search sooner? 😆
And so that's what I'm working on myself right now. So far I've seen the Bible quotes connected to almsgiving. This one hit me hard, from Tobit 4:10 (NRSVCE):
For almsgiving delivers from death and keeps you from going into the Darkness.
And then in Sirach 29:12 (NRSVCE),
Store up almsgiving in your treasury,
and it will rescue you from every disaster;
And lastly, something from Acts 10:4 (NRSVCE) when an angel appeared to Cornelius:
He stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” He answered, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.
After that I decided to study what St. Thomas Aquinas wrote in the section called Almsdeeds. However, I never imagined it would be hard to understand. 😅 Apparently he wrote it for "beginners with a background," as this priest puts it.

Seriously I never thought I'd need a guide just to read something religious aside from the Bible. What the heck! Good thing there's some videos on it. I mean, there's a lot to read and Summa Theologiae really seems too technical for someone who doesn't know much about Theology, Philosophy or whatever else religious people study. 🤪

Anyway since I do not enjoy reading long texts anymore, especially books or ebooks it's taking me a while to read everything about almsgiving. 😅 I'll just take it one step at a time as usual even if I wanna change myself immediately.
Probably I'm nitpicking again or just being scrupulous on this matter. But Jesus said we must be more righteous than the experts on God's law so I will continue to pound away little by little at all my faults and anything God does not approve of in me. With God's grace anything is possible! 💪
We Cannot Ignore the Poor and Helpless if We are Truly a Christian
Despite this hardship in giving to the street beggars, it still doesn't remove the fact that each of us needs to help those who are truly in need. Let's do it in any way we can. Even if someone is just pretending to be poor, there are still ways to help 'em out.
Here's what Jesus said, as written in St. Faustina's Diary:
So you see, giving alms doesn't always mean just providing material things. As we can read above there are three ways to do it. For example, we can share our smile, time or perhaps kind words. We can pray for them too. Like, we can ask God for someone who may be able to really help them or that they may be able to help themselves somehow.
And finally here's the real reason why I don't want to just give money or food to street beggars I see. In the words of Pope Francis (italicized):

Mi problema con la limosna
Si no tienes reparos en compartir tu dinero con los necesitados, te felicito. Sí, todos podemos hacer donaciones a organizaciones benéficas, pero no me refiero a eso.
