My fellow Hivers, it's a shame I am limited with my time and can't engage here as often as I would like to. I have an important topic to share here, regarding the events in Serbia. You may have read it from my fellow countrymen, last Saturday was the largest protest in Serbia's history. A gathering that will be etched in history books saw around million people meet in Belgrade to send a message to corrupt, criminal government that enough is enough.
Even though the government tried everything to prevent people from arriving, like canceling all public transport a day before the protest, intimidation of all sorts, nothing could stop the people from uniting.
The government brought tractors to the city center and surrounded the parliament, they brought convicts and their own defenders in masks to act as a shield and to provoke violence so that the state has the excuse to use force. But the student-led protest was proceeding with the amazing energy, song and peace. And then, as we were standing in silence for 15 minutes for the victims of train station roof collapse (which was the initial trigger for the protests) a sound cannon was fired towards the mass of people causing them to panic and run, not knowing what's hitting them. Luckily the stampedo (which the government hoped for) was avoided but the people got seriously injured. Students immediately decided to end the meeting, not wanting to escalate the violence, and letting the message of government using weapon on peaceful protesters spread all over the world. Of course, the government denies using sound cannon despite the video recordings, citizens in hospitals or the leaked video of the device in front of the parliament.
A week later, the protests continued all across the country, people are united in their cities and municipalities, fighting to rid the country of its evil rulers.
Some expected that Saturday to be "D Day" but it will take more time before the final victory. But no doubt the event was a huge success - I've never been a part of such enormous, inspired movement where everyone was united around the same cause. The government showed its fear. Fear of unity, fear of the truth, fear of the people who have finally said “no more”. It's up to the people now to continue, to use this pumped up energy to be even more vocal, fearless and determined.
A new world is possible.
