Swimming is a hubby for people who are born and brought up in a riverine areas. Infact most of them start swimming from childhood. But we still have exceptional.
Where I come from we have up to two rivers that we go to swim right from our days as kids. Whenever our seniors are going to fetch water we will be carried along and in that way it is easier to learn how to swim as we grow there. I also heard that in some families when children are born they are carried to the river. Their parents will carry them and move into the river, make sure that the water touches them. There is this believe that it will make that child use to the river and swimming as well.

Before I got to age six I was already out of the village. I grew up in an environment where there is no stream or river. I never saw the river again until when I was in my teen age when I was taken home to see my people. At that point I don't know how to swim. I never learnt it because I was too small back then to start swimming. And when it was the time to swim I was already in a far away state enjoying myself with people in the city. I never bothered to learn how to swim again because it was out of my reach.
IF I SUDDENLY FOUND MYSELF IN WATER AND NEEDED TO SWIM TO SAFETY, WILL I SURVIVE IT?
This is a very big and scaring question. The truth remains that I won't lie that I will survive it. I don't know how to swim. I have never tried it before. Although I know that I can learn it if the opportunity is given to me because there is nothing that is too difficult to do in this life.
I know that there is this life jacket that people who swim puts on when ever they want to swim Incase of any abnormalities. I think that it is what I need.
Last year it all happened that some Nollywood movies stars were crossing the river with a boat to another side without a life jacket, we all saw how it claimed the life of many of them because of that little mistake. The right thing to be done is to wear a life jacket so as to be sure of their safety.
WHAT'S STOPPING ME FROM LEARNING?
I have never given this a thought. We have a few swimming pool around in my city, that can go along way to put me through. Nothing having a river is not actually an excuse. Maybe if Because I have been very far away from the rivers that use to know, It was just forced to take it out my memory. I used to love it when I was little. But immediately I left my village i forget everything and now even if I want to swim I have to learn afraid again. I think that this is what I will find time to do.
